Keeping yourself well as you age tips from the Lifebridge Clinical Team

Deconditioning happens following a period of inactivity like when you have been in hospital or due to a sedentary lifestyle.

Health complications can occur because of this such as loss of strength and balance, memory loss and confusion, an increased risk of heart failure and infection and the inability to manage day to day chores.

Action to take:

stand up every hour, move arms and legs.

do some walking or exercises at your own pace.

use every opportunity to move.

eat protein with every meal, eat three meals a day.

drink plenty of water.

take nutritional supplements.

Get a good quality sleep.

Get up and get dressed every day.

Learn something new, do puzzles, cards and games.

Keep busy and keep social.

Preventing Pressure Injuries

Most pressure injuries and skin tears can be prevented by following simple steps such as:

maintaining good nutrition and hydration.

regular but careful mobilization, so changing position frequently and getting up and walking as much as possible.

good skin hygiene and a good moisturizing regime.

Mind and Body Tips – Tai Chi

This gentle Chinese exercise combines slow movements and deep breathing and is often described as “meditation in motion”. There is growing evidence that this mind-body practice has value in treating or preventing many health problems.

Did you know that Tai chi improves balance and, according to some studies, reduces falls. Proprioception — the ability to sense the position of one’s body in space — declines with age. Tai chi helps train this sense, which is a function of sensory neurons in the inner ear and stretch receptors in the muscles and ligaments.

Why not give Tai Chi a go but perhaps check with your doctor first to determine whether it is the right exercise for you. If you would like Lifebridge to start a Tai Chi program, please let us know by calling reception on 1800 043 186.

Move to the Groove is our latest Aged Care program to be launched and the benefits it’s providing for our customers is already becoming very apparent.

Kicking off in February 2018, the program has been running for just under 2 months and the Groovers are really getting into the swing of things. Each week the participants are learning and remembering more and more actions.

They’re improving their timings, their coordination and most importantly having a great time doing so. Already we are witnessing the improved personas of the participants. They’re happier, more engaged, more social. And it’s not just during the program, it’s in their day-to-day life as well. It’s changing their attitudes and giving them purpose and meaning again. The group is filled with infectious laughter, coupled with the serious concentration of others. It doesn’t matter what your approach, as you’re having a good time.

Move to the Groove, is an excellent program to get participants up and moving, but to also stimulate the mind. Check out our fantastic Groovers as they showcase their dance moves.

Move to the Groove runs on Mondays from 10am to 2pm. If you’re interested in joining or would like further information contact Lifebridge on 1800 043 186.
